Symphony No. 4 in E flat major, WAB 104 “Romantic”
Version from 1878/70, edited by Leopold Nowak
When Bernard Haitink conducts Bruckner, we can expect something other than solemn pathos or esoteric messages of transcendence. “Haitink never comes across as a missionary, he is no proselytizer, but instead a meticulous worker in sound whose effort is nonetheless girdled by a soft, luminous magic,” wrote Reinhard Brembeck in the “Süddeutsche Zeitung” about the maestro’s Bruckner performances with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, praising the “weightless sound that radiated from within” and touched on “essential aspects of human existence.” Two years ago, Haitink and the Munich musicians performed the Fifth Symphony during the Easter Festival. This year he has decided to undertake the Fourth, the so-called “Romantic” Symphony, famous for its bird calls and hunting horns. As a prelude to the Bruckner comes a celebration of Mozart, with Portuguese pianist Maria João Pires as soloist in the D minor Concerto, a work of profound pathos in which the composer seems to anticipate the Romantic era.
