«In Paradisum»
17th century French chant of the Requiem with polyphony by Tomás Luis de Victoria (1548–1611) and Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (1525–1594)
The Hilliard Ensemble promises to transport us into a heavenly world of sound with a program combining the unison chant of an anonymous French setting of the Requiem from the 17th century with the richly polyphonic music of the Italian composer Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina and the Spanish Tomás Luis de Victoria. Together with Orlando di Lasso, they were the leading composers of their era. They will perform a type of music that sounds as pure and clear as spring water, as fresh and pristine as a new dawn—all free of exaggerated “effects.” You can lose yourself entirely in this timeless realm of vocal beauty, leaving behind the outside world and all its noise and bustle. After all, the Hilliard Ensemble is especially suited to this music. For nearly four decades the acclaimed British vocal quartet has set the standard, performing with an unparalleled blend of sound and artful phrasing.
