Festival Strings Lucerne | Students of the Master Class | Bernard Haitink direction

It was during last year’s LUCERNE FESTIVAL at Easter that Bernard Haitink launched his master class in conducting. In 2012 the Dutch Maestro returns to share his wisdom and rich experience with young, highly gifted young musicians—as well as with any interested members of the public who would like to listen in—during a four-day master class. Haitink’s educational efforts belong to a long-standing Lucerne tradition. Such conductors as Ernest Ansermet, Herbert von Karajan, and Rafael Kubelík likewise made it a point to teach during what used to be called the International Music Festival. They wanted to impart the secrets of an art that combines many diverse elements, including technical and communication skills as well as historical awareness and analytical insights. A total of 20 to 25 young conductors will be chosen to participate in the master class from the entire pool of applicants, which last year numbered some 170 candidates from around the world. From these a still smaller group of active participants will get an opportunity to work with the Festival Strings Lucerne, and, under the guidance of Bernard Haitink, to rehearse key works of the orchestral repertoire by Beethoven, Schumann, Bruckner, and Ravel.
