“Eugene Onegin.” Lyric scenes based on Pushkin’s novel
Concert performance in Russian language
Igor Stravinsky once described “Eugene Onegin,” the work of his admired colleague Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, as “the most Russian of all operas.” The choice of material itself already confirms this assessment, for Tchaikovsky turned for his source to Alexander Pushkin’s verse novel of the same name, which describes a lovingly detailed genre portrait of Russian society. The young heroine Tatyana confesses her love for the Petersburg dandy Onegin and is brusquely rejected. But when the two encounter one another years later, it is Onegin who suddenly discovers his feelings for Tatyana, only to be rebuffed. To convey the conversational sequences of this opera, Tchaikovsky developed a new musical style akin to conversation. He resorts in the vocal parts to a kind of parlando which idiomatically addresses the peculiarities of the Russian language. But there is singing enough from the orchestra, which plays the most beautiful melodies. And what an assignment for the BR Symphony and its principal conductor, Mariss Jansons!
