The Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks launches this year’s LUCERNE FESTIVAL at Easter residency with a chamber concert. No less an artist than the fabulous Japanese pianist Mitsuko Uchida will join the musicians, and for good reason: together they will perform Beethoven’s early quintet from 1796, which almost sounds like a piano concerto in disguise. Beethoven himself played the piano part on several occasions, when he would insert solo improvisations so excessive that the “accompanying” wind players became restless. Beethoven, or, more precisely, his Septet (Op. 20), served as the model for Franz Schubert when he composed his famous Octet for a mixed ensemble of strings and wind instruments in 1824. The latter work, which calls to mind a serenade with dance-like reminiscences of musical life in Vienna at the time, is simultaneously pervaded by a profound sense of melancholy.
