This Week’s Prize Question: A Look in the Mirror

Pierre-Laurent Aimard (Felix Broede/DG)

The focus of Pierre-Laurent Aimard’s recital on 28 November is Maurice Ravel’s music of reflective images, “Miroirs.” Aimard has in fact devised the program as a mirror overall, in that Ravel’s music on the one hand reflects the art of Frédéric Chopin and on the other foreshadows the aesthetic of Olivier Messiaen, with these two composers framing the evening. You can be our guests and receive free tickets to experience this cleverly conceived program – so long as you correctly answer this week’s prize question and have a bit of luck on your side….

Please answer the following:

Our prize question similarly concerns reflections—or, to put it more exactly, it concerns a self-reflection. French composer Maurice Ravel defined his own music according to a phrase which elicited all-around astonishment. Which of the following was his startling description:

a. Completely free improvisation, like Chopin
b. Tightly controlled, like Beethoven
c. Quite simple, nothing but Mozart
d. Pure sound, like Debussy
e. Logic and form, exactly like Bach

Please send the letter that you believe corresponds to the correct answer to the following address: info@lucernefestival.ch

We will randomly select the winners of three pairs of free tickets from those who have sent in the correct answer. Responses must be received by 10 November.  The selection is final.
