This Week’s Prize Question: The Head of the Concertgebouw

Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra (Simon van Boxtel)

A critics’ poll of the British magazine “Gramophone” singled out the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra as the “best orchestra in the world.” Since as a rule only world-class orchestras perform at LUCERNE FESTIVAL, it’s no surprise that for decades these elite musicians from Amsterdam have been regular summer guests here. You can win three pairs of free tickets to the Dutch orchestra’s first concert, which takes place on 2 September under the baton of their chief conductor Mariss Jansons.

Please answer the following:

The lucky winners will be able attend the first of the Concertgebouw Orchestra’s guest concerts, featuring works by Béla Bartók, Rodion Shchedrin, and Igor Stravinsky. But first you must provide the correct answer to our prize question. Please tell us which of the following four gentlemen was not a chief conductor of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra:

a. Willem Mengelberg
b. Reinbert de Leeuw
c. Eduard van Beinum
d. Eugen Jochum

Please send the letter and name that you believe corresponds to the correct answer to the following address: info@lucernefestival.ch

We will randomly select the winners of three pairs of free tickets from those who have sent in the correct answer. Responses must be received by Monday, 30 August.
The decision is final.
